Financial Protection for Older Americans

6/22/2016

With over 50 million Americans aged 62 and older, Older Adults are prime targets for financial exploitation both by persons they know and trust and by strangers. In fact financial exploitation has been called “the crime of the 21st century” with one study suggesting that older Americans lost at least $3 billion to financial exploitation by a broad spectrum of perpetrators in the past year.

To help educate seniors on the signs and prevention of financial exploitation, staff from MNB Stratton recently sponsored a two-session free seminar at Grandview in Stratton. The seminars focused on fraud, identity theft, and being prepared financially for unexpected events.  Marci Sis, former VP and Branch Manager of Stratton MNB, and Lorrinda Cheatham, Branch Manager at MNB Stratton, presented the information from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau entitled “Money Smart for Older Adults.” Following lunch provided by Grandview the attendees actively participated in sharing stories, giving advice taken from a variety of backgrounds and situations, and asking questions.
